Professor of social work and diversity activist
- Senator Wanda Thomas Bernard was a founding member and past president of the Association of Black Social Workers. She was the first Black Nova Scotian to hold a tenure-track position at Dalhousie University and to be promoted to Full Professor. She also served as director of the school from 2001 to 2011. Her areas of focus are cultural diversity, anti-oppression and Afrocentric social work.
- In 2005, she was awarded Order of Canada for her work on Black men and the violence of racism. She has also received the Order of Nova Scotia, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, and the Harry Jerome Award Community Service Award for Excellence in Community Service.
