Award-winning rural medicine expert, physician, and community leader
- Originally from Zimbabwe, Senator Mohamed-Iqbal Ravalia grew up at the time when the country was known as Rhodesia and was run as an apartheid state. He emigrated to Canada over 30 years ago and settled in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, where he became a fixture and a leader in the community of Twillingate.
- At the time of his appointment, Senator Ravalia was an associate professor of family medicine and the assistant dean of the Rural Medical Education Network at Memorial University. He also served as the senior medical officer at the Notre Dame Bay Memorial Health Centre in Newoundland and Labrador.
