First Muslim senator, peace and human rights advocate
- Born in Kampala, Uganda, she is the first Canadian senator born in Africa, the first senator of South Asian descent, and the first Muslim senator in the Canadian Senate.
- Senator Jaffer is an outspoken advocate for peace and human rights. From 2002 to 2006 she served as Canada's Special Envoy for Peace in Sudan, and from 2002-2005 she chaired the Canadian Committee on Women, Peace, and Security. She regularly is invited to speak on UN Security Council Resolution 1325, which seeks to incorporate women and gendered perspectives in all UN peace operations.
