Speaker of the Senate

45th Speaker of the Senate and the first from Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Senator George Furey began his career working as a teacher, vice-principal and principal with the St. John’s Catholic School Board from 1969-80, where he formed and conducted St. Stephen's High School's first school band and coached the St. Stephen's Men's high school basketball team.
  • He received a bachelor of law Degree in 1983, and was called to the bar of the Law Society of Newfoundland and Labrador in 1984. Early in his law career, he challenged the Criminal Code language on sexual assault and proved that, with the advent of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, certain Criminal Code provisions were unconstitutional.
