Bernadette Clement

As Mayor of Cornwall, first Black woman mayor of an Ontario city

  • Up until her appointment as a senator in June 2021, Bernadette Clement was the Mayor of Cornwall. She was elected to the position as the first Black woman to serve as a mayor in Ontario in 2018, after three terms as a city councillor.
  • Prior to her political career, Clement began working as a lawyer at the non-profit Roy McMurtry Legal Clinic. She has also taught Ethics and Legalities at St. Lawrence College on a part-time basis.
